from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Lauster (born January 21, 1940 in Stuttgart ) is a German psychologist and author of numerous self-help books .

He became known through his long-time bestseller “Love. Psychology of a Phenomenon ”. This book has now reached a circulation of over 1 million copies. Many of his books have been translated into several languages.

Lauster studied psychology, philosophy , art history and anthropology in Tübingen . Since January 1971 he has been running a practice for psychological diagnostics and counseling in Cologne . Since 1971 Lauster has been publishing popular scientific psychological non-fiction books . The total German circulation of his books is over 4.5 million copies.

For his books, Lauster does not claim to be a universal solution for the problem under discussion, but presents it as food for thought and always emphasizes the importance of professional psychological treatment in the form of therapy . He avoids making the reader feel hopeless or imperfect by portraying a psychological superman . Peter Lauster is characterized by his understandable, not cynical or instructive language. He does not back up his statements with cross-references to scientific sources, but leaves it to the reader to decide whether to accept the content.

Classification of intellectual history

Lauster belongs to the generation of German psychologists and sociologists (such as Dieter Duhm ) who strongly questioned the institution of marriage in their books in the 1970s and 1980s, and who therefore called bourgeois morality "carcinogenic". The concept of love that is conveyed here is based on sensitivity . People should perceive themselves and their surroundings and fully immerse themselves in the here and now. Concepts such as loyalty were considered obsolete, even as an expression of a sick, stunted psyche. He called an eternal, great love myth . So this is about love as eros , not agape (although in The Seven Mistakes of Men agape is seen as equivalent to eros).
