Peter Layer

Peter Layer (born October 28, 1951 in Brombach (Eberbach) ) is a German internist .

Layer studied human medicine from 1971 to 1976 at the University of Tübingen and the University of Edinburgh . In 1981 he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation for Dr. med. (summa cum laude) and his dissertation was awarded the Ismar Boas Prize of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). From 1983 to 1985 he was a fellow of the German Research Foundation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1988 Layer completed his habilitation at the University Hospital Essen and was appointed professor there in 1992. Since 1996 he has been the medical director of the Israelite Hospital in Hamburg and head of the medical clinic there. In 2002 he co-founded the Center for Cancer Research at the Israelite Hospital (Indivumed).

Layer conducts research on regulation and diseases of the pancreas (especially acute and chronic pancreatitis ) and the gastrointestinal tract (including irritable bowel syndrome ).

Layer was a member of the Board of Directors from 2000 to 2013 and President of the Congress of DGVS in 2012.
