Metz studied chemistry in Münster with a diploma in 1979 and a doctorate with Hans Jürgen Schäfer in 1983. As a post-doctoral student he was with Barry Trost at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In 1991 he completed his habilitation in Münster and, after substitute professorships in Hamburg (1992/93) and Kiel (1994), became professor at the TU Dresden in 1996 .

It deals with the total synthesis of biologically relevant natural substances ( diterpenes , sesquiterpenes , Morphine , flavonoids , Epidithiodiketopiperazine , zaragozic , macrodiolides ), pericyclic reactions, organometallic catalysis , the representation and synthesis of sulfur heterocycles and chemistry under extremely high pressure.

He is one of the authors of the Organikum .
