Peter Redford Scott Lang

Peter Redford Scott Lang (born October 8, 1850 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † July 5, 1926 in St Andrews ) was a Scottish mathematician.

Life

Scott-Lang's father was a paralegal Robert Laidlow Lang, born around 1808. His mother was Barbara Turnbull Cochrane, who was born in England around 1818. He was the youngest of six children.

After studying at the Edinburgh Institution, he moved to the University of Edinburgh . During his studies he also completed an apprenticeship as a life insurance agent. In the 1871 census , his occupation was indicated as an insurance agent. In 1872 he graduated with MA and B. Sc. and in the same year was employed as assistant for natural history at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1879 he was appointed to the Regius Chair of Mathematics at the University of St Andrews . He held this chair until his retirement in 1921. His successor was Herbert Westren Turnbull .

In 1859, Scott-Lang married Alice M. Dickson of Colinton, Midlothian . The couple had a daughter, Edith Mary Lang. Scott-Lang died on July 5, 1926 after suffering from several years of heart disease at his home in Mansefield, St Andrews.

Honors

In 1878 Scot-Lang was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1921 he was knighted.
