Peter Servauter

Peter Servauter (* 15th century or 16th century; † May 3, 1574 in Basel ) was a merchant from Antwerp in Basel and a pioneer of silk ribbon weaving there .

life and work

Servauter (Serwouter) settled in Basel in 1567 as a Calvinist religious refugee, where he acquired citizenship in 1568. He initially ran a small business with fabrics and haberdashery , which he was able to expand greatly thanks to the help of the Antwerp-based merchant Marcos Pérez . In 1571 he set up the first silk ribbon weaving mill in Basel, which he ran with the help of eight journeymen.
