Peter Stemmer (born October 6, 1954 in Essen ) is German professor of philosophy at the University of Konstanz .

Stemmer studied philosophy , Catholic theology and Greek studies in Bochum and Berlin ( Free University ) from 1974 to 1981 . He received his doctorate in 1981 in Bochum with a study on the philosophy of the Enlightenment. From 1981 to 1986 he headed the central editorial office of the Historical Dictionary of Philosophy in Berlin, from 1986 to 1992 he worked as a university assistant in the Department of Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin. There he completed his habilitation in 1990 with a thesis on Plato . Since 1993 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Konstanz.

Stemmer is mainly known for his research on ancient philosophy as well as for his systematic work on moral philosophy and the theory of normativity. In moral philosophy he represents, first in his book Acting in favor of others (2000), a variety of moral contractualism (cf. contract theory ). In his work on normativity theory he develops a position according to which all forms of the normative are subject-dependent, more closely dependent on the will.
