Peter Weise (captain)

Peter Weise (born January 31, 1944 in Gotenhafen ) is a German captain, businessman and writer. He is the youngest survivor of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff .

Life

Peter Weise was rescued from a lifeboat on January 31, 1945 as a toddler after the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. A medical officer estimated his age to be one year and his date of birth was set as January 31, 1944 in Gotenhafen. He spent his childhood and youth with his rescuer, who later adopted him, in Rostock-Gehlsdorf .

From 1960 he completed training in the GDR's merchant fleet. In 1968 he received his certificate of proficiency as a captain on a long voyage . From 1974 until his involuntary resignation from VEB Deutfracht / Seereederei Rostock in 1982 he was a captain. From 1982 he worked in the Rostock seaport (DSR). He graduated from the University of Rostock with a degree in shipping economics in 1990. In the same year he was rehabilitated by the DSR.

In 1990 he became a board member of Seehafen Rostock AG / GmbH, marketing manager and press spokesman for Seehafen Rostock Umschlaggesellschaft. From 1995 to 1998 Peter Weise was President of the Baltic Ports Organization. In 2004 he retired from active professional life.

Peter Weise lives in Rostock. He published autobiographical stories, short stories and animal stories in poetry.
