Sir Peter John Westmacott GCMG , LVO (born December 23, 1950 in Edington , Somerset ) is a British diplomat.

Career

He entered the diplomatic service in 1972 and his first overseas assignment was as 2nd Secretary in Tehran , Iran in 1974. In 1978 he was appointed envoy to the EU Commission and from 1980 to 1984 he was in Paris. After a time in London , from 1987 onwards he was “Head of Chancery” in Ankara . In 1990 he became Deputy Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales and in 1993 he was sent to Washington, DC as Counselor . Later positions included "Director for the Americas in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office" and "Deputy Under Secretary of State".

From 2002 to 2006 he was British Ambassador to Turkey , then Ambassador to France . From January 2012 to 2016 he served as Ambassador to the United States of America . In 1993 he was accepted as a lieutenant in the Royal Victorian Order . In 2003 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George and in 2016 he was elevated to the Knight Grand Cross of the same order.
