Peter van Dongen (born October 21, 1966 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch comic book writer and illustrator.

Life

Peter van Dongen is the son of a Dutchman of German-Dutch descent and an Indonesian. The mother Peggy Anita Kneefel, whose family came from the island of Ternate , was born in Sulawesi in 1941 and fled with her family to the Netherlands in 1952. The grandfather Henri Johan Kneefel, a KNIL officer and a European-Indonesian mestizo , was murdered by the Japanese occupiers because of his loyal attitude to the Dutch crown .

Van Dongen attended the "Graphic School" in Amsterdam. At the age of 16 he was able to publish articles in the magazine De Vrije Balloen .

Since then he has been working as a freelance illustrator and writing comics.

In 1990 he published his first comic story with Muizentheater . In 1992 he visited Indonesia as a tourist, also to do research for his next book. In the graphic novel Rampokan he deals with the Indonesian war of independence against the Dutch colonial power , it took him eight years to create the first volume, which appeared in September 1998, and the comic was printed in advance in the daily newspaper Het Parool . The second part of Rampokan was published in 2004, and in 2005 van Dongen also presented his book in Indonesia on the island of Java .
