Cornelis Danckerts I: Portrait of Petrus Molinaeus

Petrus Molinaeus , French / English Pierre Du Moulin (born October 16, 1568 in Buhy , † March 10, 1658 in Sedan ) was a Reformed theologian and university professor.

Life

As the son of a Huguenot preacher, he owed his survival on Bartholomew's Night to the courageous commitment of a maid. As a Protestant , he was prevented from studying because of the civil war in Paris, so he first studied at the Sedan Academy and in Cambridge in England. In 1592 he followed the theologian Franz Junius to the University of Leiden . In 1593 Molinaeus became an associate professor of eloquence and natural theology in Leiden. From there he followed a call to the University of Paris in 1598 . In 1611 and 1619 the University of Leiden tried unsuccessfully to bring him back to its chair of theology. He then switched to the Protestant college in Sedan and stayed there until his death. As a theologian, he defended the Protestant faith against Catholicism and, on the other hand, was a critic of Moyse Amyraut . One of his first German translators was Bernardus Ancumanus .
