Peyssonnelia is a genus of thallous red algae from the Peyssonneliaceae family. The genus was established by Joseph Decaisne in 1841. He named it after the French naturalist Jean-André Peyssonnel . The genus includes about 90 species .
features
The algae usually have a dark red or purple to pink thallus , which can be evenly colored or patterned differently. Often concentric lines or radial stripes appear in the pattern. The algae adhere to the hard substrate with the help of single-cell or multicellular rhizoids . The thallus is often more or less calcified on the underside. Some species have cystolites . The reproductive organs are formed in nemathecia , which are usually flanked by paraphyses . The tetraspores formed are divided into a regular or irregular cross shape.
