Joseph Decaisne

Joseph Decaisne (born March 7, 1807 in Brussels , † February 8, 1882 in Paris ) was a French botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Decne. "

Life

In 1824, Decaisne began to work as a gardener at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. As assistant to Adrien-Henri de Jussieu , he processed herbarium specimens from explorers and, on this basis, described numerous new species. In 1835 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , in 1846 in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1847 in the Académie des Sciences and in 1854 in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Joseph Decaisne was a founding member in 1854 and President of the Société botanique de France in 1855, 1860, 1867 and 1873 . As the successor to Jules Émile Planchon , he took over the editing of the magazine Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe published by Louis van Houtte in 1854 .

Honors

The genus Decaisnea Hook.f. & Thomson from the finger fruit family (Lardizabalaceae) and the species Caralluma decaisneana (Lem.) NEBr. named from the subfamily Asclepioideae.
