description
Vegetative characteristics
Decaisnea species are summer-green, upright, sparsely branched shrubs . The winter buds are covered with two outer scales. The leaves are pinnate unpaired. The leaf stalks are articulated at the base, the partial leaf stalks are short, the partial leaves face each other.
Generative characteristics
Decaisnea species are single sexed ( monoecious ). The flowers are in terminal, paniculate , racemose inflorescences together.
The flowers have six sepals , usually overlapping like roof tiles, and no petals . The male flowers have six fused stamens with elongated anthers . The rudimentary pistil is small and has grown together with the stamen. In female flowers, the staminodes are free or are fused at the base. The three carpels are straight, the ovules stand in two rows on each side of the axially facing dividing line of the carpels. The scar is noticeable.
The fruit that pops up is straight or more or less curved. The seeds are surrounded by a white, translucent pulp and pressed in.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.
Systematics
The genus Decaisnea was established in 1854 by Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomas Thomson (botanists) . The generic name Decaisnea honors Joseph Decaisne (1807-1882), a Belgian-French botanist and agronomist (and the first editor of the Lardizabalaceae family). A synonym for Decaisnea Hook. f. & Thomson nom. Cons. is Slackia handle.
There are only two types:
- Blue cucumber ( Decaisnea fargesii Franch. ): It occurs in Nepal and China .
- Decaisnea insignis (Griff.) Hook. f. & Thomson : It occurs from the eastern Himalayas to northern Myanmar .
