Pezzolo is a fraction of Messina . It is located in the south on a hill above the Strait of Messina , about 24 km from the city center.

history

The Pezzolo area was inhabited since ancient times. The village originated in the Middle Ages when the coasts were unsafe due to attacks by the Saracens . After the anti-Spanish revolt from 1674 to 1678, Pezzolo with Altolia, Molino and Briga Superiore was sold to private landowners. In 1727 these properties were confiscated and returned to state ownership.

In 1844 the village was able to exempt itself from the demands of the San Placido di Calonero monastery after a trial before the regional court (in which other villages were also involved) .

In 1866 the Italian state confiscated the property of the religious communities and sold them or taxed them. Several pieces of land became the property of the citizens of the village.

Churches and monuments

The parish church is dedicated to St. Nicholas and dates from the second half of the 17th century. Badly damaged by the earthquake of 1908 , it was renovated in the following years. It has a portal that comes from the school of Antonello Gagini .

Next to the church rises a high bell tower, which, according to an inscription placed there, was built in 1598.

Above the village was the Church of the Madonna dell'Itria , which was destroyed in the 1908 earthquake; Only a few small finds of it have survived, while the Church of the Madonna di Loreto, which gave the area its name, has largely been preserved. This church, in the Byzantine style , was probably built in the 8th century.

Economy and Transport

Pezzolo is on Strada Provinciale 35 and is served by line 5 of the Messinese public transport company.

Until the 1960s, only agriculture was practiced. Typical products are citrus fruits, olives and grapes. The rearing of the silkworm and the silk production were carried out until the Second World War .
