The Pfaffenhütchen lesser moth ( Nephopterix angustella ) is a small butterfly from the family of the moth (Pyralidae).

features

The moths have a wingspan of 20-25 mm. The basic color of the forewings is light beige with red-brown speckles. A black transverse band runs about a third of the wing length, but it does not extend to the front edge of the wing. In the resting position, this transverse band forms a hump consisting of upright black tufts of scales. In addition, there is an ocher-colored cross band behind this cross band. Due to its pattern, the butterfly is easily distinguishable from other species. The white hind wings have a brownish border. The caterpillars have a brownish head capsule. Otherwise their color varies between greenish, brownish and light beige.

distribution

The Pfaffenhütchen larder is widespread in Europe. In the north, its occurrence extends to southern and central Scandinavia. In Great Britain the species occurs mainly in the south of England, but is rare there.

Way of life

The moth is usually seen on hedge borders and in bushes. The species forms two generations a year. The butterflies usually fly from April to July and September to November. The host plant of the butterfly species is the common spindle bush ( Euonymus europaeus ), also known as "euonymus". The Japanese spindle bush ( Euonymus japonicus ) and the common bird cherry ( Prunus padus ) are also mentioned as fodder plants . The caterpillars develop inside the fruits of their host plants. The pupation takes place in a cocoon on the ground.
