Systematics
Class : Insects (Insecta)
Order : Butterflies (Lepidoptera)
Superfamily : Common moth (Pyraloidea)
Family : European borer (Pyralidae)
Subfamily : Phycitinae
Scientific name
Phycitinae
Zeller , 1839

The Phyticinae are a large subfamily of the borer (Pyralidae) within the order of the butterflies . Worldwide about 4000 species in about 600 genera are counted in this group. The vast majority of species are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, while only about 120 species are native to Central Europe.

features

The Phyticinae are mostly smaller representatives of the borer (Pyralidae) with tightly arranged wings. They are probably a monophylum , because certain characteristics of the caterpillars occur only in this group.

Way of life

Among the representatives of the Phycitinae there are in addition to the "usual" ways of life (leaf and seed eater, leaf moth) also specialists who eat insects, especially plant lice , or plant galls.

Systematics

In the subfamily Phyticinae, the previously valid subfamilies Anerastiinae and Peoriinae are usually included. 58 genera with almost 120 species are known from Central Europe.
