history

A church was mentioned in documents in 745. The late Gothic church building was extended in 1706 by a north aisle. In 1856 the church was elevated to a parish church. After a tower and roof fire in 1890, the facility was completely renewed. The exterior was restored in 1977 and the interior was restored in 1972.

architecture

The church stands southeast of Adnet in the valley floor and is surrounded by a cemetery.

Church exterior

The nave, extended to the north by a side aisle, is spanned by a gable roof and has a deep beveled segmental arch portal in the south. The choir with a polygonal end has stepped buttresses. The non-articulated late Gothic west tower with bi-porous windows has a pointed gable helmet from 1929. The chamfered pointed arch portal in the west leads into a groin-vaulted tower hall. There, a late Gothic interior portal with multiple grooves and bars leads under a straight lintel into the interior, above which a segmental arch-shaped relief depicts the stoning of Stephen from the late 15th century.

Church interior

The three-bay nave has groin vaults on polygonal pillars with a base and capital. Spolia from the late Gothic vault was found in 1973 during the excavation under the church floor. The round arch of the choir arch is chamfered. The two-bay choir, drawn in to the south, has a five-eighth end and a ribbed vault with a four-part diamond star on polygonal services with a base from the beginning of the 16th century. The gallery was built in 1972. The yokes of the side aisle are groin-vaulted, the two yokes on the choir are slightly narrower and have a straight end. The side aisle shows itself with pilasters and a continuous, strongly profiled cornice. The side aisle by the choir is wide open to the choir with a central supporting wide round column. The sacristy portal south in the first yoke of the choir was built around 1700. Above is a portal with a balcony to the pulpit. The sacristy has a flat ceiling.

Extensions

In 1693, a Mount of Olives Chapel with two arched arcades was added to the south of the tower. Inside the Ölberg chapel has two groin vaults. In the chapel there is a group of figures from the Mount of Olives scene from around 1890 and a tombstone by Thomas Helweger Steinmetz from the second half of the 17th century.

In the south of the first yoke of the nave, a chapel for the dead was added under a gable roof in 1718. A niche with a leg box from the 19th century is built on the east wall of the chapel. Inside the funeral chapel has a flat ceiling with a stucco mirror. The altar from the construction period shows the altarpiece Seven Refuge and in the upper image the Trinity. There is a priest's tombstone from 1674.

In the south of the first yoke of the choir, a baroque sacristy was added under a hipped roof. The walls of the windows are bevelled.

Furnishing

High altar

The altars were made in 1890. The marble high altar bears the central figure of the Good Shepherd , alternating with the central figure of the risen man around 1890, and the side figures of Stephen and Laurentius. The left side altar bears the figures of Joseph, Rupert and Virgil. The right side altar bears the figures of Immaculata, Barbara and Katharina. The marble pulpit on an octagonal column with base and capital dates from the beginning of the 16th century, the marble dining grill from the middle of the 18th century. Several tombstones date from the 18th century.

The organ was built by Albert Mauracher (1891).

graveyard

The entrance portal with beveled round arch shows the relief Stephen and Laurentius in the upper middle field and the relief Crucifixion marked 1520 on the inside.

Rectory

The parsonage, which essentially dates from the 17th century, was rebuilt in 1970/1972 and displayed the coat of arms of Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg (1676). In 2015 it was demolished and replaced by a new building.
