The parish church Schönau im Mühlkreis stands on a free space to the north in the eastern part of the village in the municipality of Schönau im Mühlkreis in the Freistadt district in Upper Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church , consecrated to Saint James the Elder , belongs to the dean's office in Unterweißbach in the Diocese of Linz . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

The church was initially a branch of the Naarn parish church . A parish is mentioned in a document in 1230.

The north and south nave walls are Romanesque. The tower was built around 1300. The chapel to the north of the nave was built around 1500. The nave was extended to the west around 1516. In 1520/1540 the church was vaulted. In 1968/1969 the church was expanded to the east according to the plans of the architect Anton Zemann . The Gothic choir, the Gothic west gallery and the neo-Gothic furnishings were removed.

architecture

The Romanesque-Gothic hall building has an extension to the east. The old three-bay hall with a needle cap barrel has a remarkable, strongly geometric vault shape with partly negating net rib configuration, comparable to the parish church of Saxen . The mighty squat tower stands on the north side of the nave. To the east of the tower is a late-Gothic, vaulted net-ribbed chapel with a rectangular floor plan at the length of the third nave yoke. It is open to the nave yoke with a wide pointed arch arcade. The ogival triumphal arch opens to the east, broad, lower and south projecting extension with an asymmetrical and partially convex altar wall. The extension has three naves. Roof slopes determine the shape of the room. The sacristy and a baptistery are located in the two east corners. In the south there is a second baptistery with a narrow vestibule. The church has gable roofs - steeper above the old nave and flatter above the extension. The tower has a wedge roof.

Furnishing

The left side altar bears the figure of Florian from the middle of the 18th century. The tabernacle with Peter and Paul is from the third quarter of the 17th century.

The parapet organ was built in 1993 by the Upper Austrian Organ Building Institute, II Man./18. Reg. A bell with a relief of St Joseph and a palmette frieze is from the 18th century. The tower clock is from the 19th century.
