The parish church of Sittendorf is in an elevated position in the southwest of the Kirchweiler Sittendorf in the municipality of Wienerwald in the Mödling district in Lower Austria . On the holy John the Baptist ordained Roman Catholic parish church , the monastery of Heiligenkreuz incorporated part of the deanery Holy Cross in the Vicariate Under the Vienna Woods to the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church and the former cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A church was mentioned in documents in 1381. From 1579 to 1623 the church was Protestant and represented the dispute between the Neudeggern and the gentlemen of Wildegg Castle and the Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

The essentially Romanesque church building was extended to the west around 1700 and reoriented, with the tower now standing on the former east apse. There was a fire in 1683. In 1783 the church was elevated to a parish church.

architecture

The facade shows a plaster structure and arched windows. The semicircular tower ground floor in the east corresponds to the approximately equally wide semicircular west apse. The base of the tower shows Romanesque ashlar masonry and chamfered arched windows, the eight-sided tower top with small arched acoustic windows has a pyramid helmet. On the south side there is a baroque two-storey sacristy extension. The vestibule was built in 1960.

Regina Gattinger mentions a grave slab on the former choir in 1702.

The interior of the church shows a nave under a wooden beam ceiling, the semicircular apse and the open tower ground floor have domed vaults. There is a walled-up Romanesque window above the retracted organ gallery. The sacristy has a stucco mirror ceiling from the second half of the 18th century, and the weekday chapel is on the upper floor.

The crypt under the nave with a flat brick barrel vault placed crosswise is probably from the 18th century.

Furnishing

The modern popular altar corresponds to a monumental hanging crucifix. On the apse wall are the baroque sculptures Hll. Elisabeth, John the Baptist and Zacharias with a setting from the 19th century.

A painting Epiphany around 1700 and the sacristy door were transferred here from Wildegg Castle.

Ferdinand and Alois Erler built the organ in 1859.
