history

The church in Walding was first mentioned in a document in 1143. In 1560 the small, medieval, Gothic church burned down and was later rebuilt somewhat changed. The church was enlarged between 1964 and 1966 by a modern, almost square extension building, so that a non-uniform church building was created. In 1994 the interior was redesigned. The glass windows come from Alfred Stifter .

Pilgrimage

In the 18th century Walding was of national importance as a place of pilgrimage “Maria Walding”. In 1765 the single butcher Michael König from Walding in Graz fell seriously ill. He vowed, should he get well, to donate an image of Mary based on the model of the image of Our Lady in the Minorite Church in Graz for the Waldings Church. After he had regained health, he had the picture made and brought it to the church in Walding. The miraculous image “Maria Hilf”, which is still on the old high altar, attracted numerous pilgrims from near and far.

A few years later, Maria Walding lost its status as a place of pilgrimage due to the intervention of the gentlemen from Pöstlingberg , who shied away from the competition.
