Modiolus is a genus of mussels (Bivalvia) from the family of mussels (Mytilidae).

The species of the genus Modiolus have equal, elongated housing with a curved or angled dorsal edge and a blunt vertebra. They get quite big; the shell of the large mussel is up to 23 cm long. The vertebra sits well behind the rounded front end. The ligament is quite long. The anterior sphincter sits far in front near the front edge. The lock is toothless, the lock edge is smooth. The shell consists of an inner, aragonitic layer ( mother-of-pearl ), a middle, calcitic layer consisting of prismatic structures and an outer organic layer ( periostracum ). The surface of the shell is usually only provided with growth strips; but there are also species with coarse ribs. The periostracum is hairy or leafy. The cases are attached to the ground with byssus.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The genus Modiolus is distributed worldwide, from the polar seas to the tropics. They live half or completely buried in the mud and sand on the shelves to a depth of about 200 m. Only the edge of the mantle with the two somewhat open flaps protrudes over the sediment surface.

Taxonomy, nomenclature and systematics

The Taxon Modiolus was established by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in 1799 . Strictly speaking, Modiolus Lamarck, 1799 is a younger synonym of Volsella Scopoli, 1777. By decision of the Commission for Zoological Nomenclature (Opinion 325) the genus Modiolus was placed on the official list of valid genus names and Volsella Scopoli, 1777 suppressed for the purposes of priority (but not for the purposes of homonymy). The gender of Modiolus is masculine, the type species is Mya modiolus through (secondary) absolute tautonymy.

The term modiolus is derived from the diminutive of the Latin term modius , which means a bushel . Literally translated modiolus so Scheffelchen .
