The magazine, founded in 1924, appeared in the first ten years as a “bi-monthly for seeds, cultivation and care of cultivated plants ” and from 1935 with the subtitle “monthly for all fields and plant cultivation and plant cultivation experiments”. Your main goal should be to bring together the results of crop cultivation research with the experiences of agricultural practice in a common knowledge platform through a comprehensive report. The main topics were the seed industry , cultivation, care and harvesting of agricultural crops, problems of crop rotation , disease and pest control as well as questions from the field of agricultural engineering .

The editor and chief editor was the crop scientist Ernst Klapp . After 1930, the editorial board included several of his specialist colleagues, including Otto Appel , Theodor Roemer , Adolf Zade and Arnold Scheibe . Since then, experimental research articles have predominated in the journal.

The total of 20 volumes are considered important documentation for the history of science in the field of crop production. Only four individual issues of volume 20 (1943/45) have been published; the last issue was delivered in February 1945.
