Adolf Zade (born October 12, 1880 in Polzin , Pomerania ; † March 28, 1949 in Stockholm ) was a German crop scientist .

Life

Adolf Zade, son of a farmer, studied after several years in agricultural practice at the Agricultural University in Berlin and since 1906 at the University of Jena . With Wilhelm Edler he received his doctorate there in 1909 with a monograph on the flying oat . In 1912 he went to the agricultural research station Harleshausen near Kassel as an assistant. In 1913 he returned to Jena, completed his habilitation a year later and from 1914 to 1918 temporarily headed the Agricultural Institute of the University of Jena.

On behalf of the German Agricultural Society , Zade evaluated variety trials with oats, particularly during the First World War . This activity prompted him to further investigate and he wrote a comprehensive monograph on this crop. In the book Der Hafer , published in 1918 . A monograph on a scientific and practical basis , he has completely presented the known knowledge about oats and created a reliable reference work.

In 1919 Zade accepted an offer at the University of Leipzig , where he was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding in 1920. Initially, he dealt with the breeding of forage plants. In 1921 he published the book Career and Breeding Basics of Agricultural Crops . Later, methodological questions related to the establishment of field tests, problems of grassland management and physiological studies of the water balance of cultivated plants were the focus of his research.

Zade's most important scientific achievement is his book Plant Cultivation Teaching for Farmers , published in 1933 . With this textbook he created a standard work recognized by the entire professional world. Organized by way of example, it contains everything you need to know about the agricultural crops grown in Central Europe.

Because of his Jewish descent, Zade was removed from office on October 1, 1933, and retired. His textbook was no longer allowed to be sold in Germany. With his wife Beatrice Zade , a Swedish writer, Zade moved to Stockholm. There he found a job in the chemical industry and worked on the development of pesticides. For health reasons, he had to refuse the call he received after the Second World War to return to his previous position at the University of Leipzig.
