The tailors (Phalangiidae) form a family within the order of the harvestmen (Opiliones). In Central Europe it is represented with around 33 species, while around 380 species have been described worldwide.

Representatives of the Phalangiidae belong to the suborder of the Eupnoi, Palpatores are also obsolete and are distributed worldwide, but they seem to be absent in Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. Subfamilies can be distinguished in the different continents.

Their name is derived from the ancient Greek phalangion and roughly means harvest helper or, better, harvester.

features

Phalangids stand out because of their long pedipalps , which are large and strong, almost like a leg. The pedipalps also have a functional tarsal claw and can be hairy, bristled or feathered. The tarsal claw is smooth-edged to dentition. The normally proportioned chelicerae have uniformly large, massive, sometimes double teeth. The dorsal scutum is soft-skinned and poorly developed and, if it can be seen at all, developed as a scutum parvum .
