Phallotorynus is a genus of viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The fish are found in southern Brazil, Paraguay and northeast Argentina in the catchment area of Río Paraná and Río Paraguay and in the Rio Paraíba .

features

Phallotorynus species reach lengths between 2 and 2.5 cm (males) and between 2.5 and 3.5 cm (females). They are inconspicuously colored from olive brown to olive gray and show some thin, blackish transverse bands on the sides of the body. Except for the blackish dorsal fin, the fins are largely colorless. The females' anal fin is speckled with black dots that concentrate on the front edge of the fin so that they form a black stripe on the first fin ray. A membrane runs along the underside of the male gonopodium . The gonopodium has a downwardly curved hook at its tip, which, viewed more closely, is branched like an antler. The sideline system of the fish extends to the preoperculum and consists of both open and closed pores. The exact morphology of the rays of the dorsal and anal fin is used as a further diagnostic feature of the genus.
