A pharmaceutical engineer (also a pharmaceutical engineer ) belongs to the pharmaceutical staff in the pharmacy in Germany and was trained at engineering schools in the GDR .

The three-year course focused primarily on the manufacture and distribution of medicines . Within the legal area of the GDR they were allowed to represent the pharmacist as a pharmacy manager, be on call and in exceptional cases also manage a dispensing point (smaller pharmacy). With the reunification , pharmaceutical engineers have gained powers similar to pharmacist assistants . These are allowed to represent the pharmacist for four weeks after notification to the competent authority if they are capable of doing so in terms of their knowledge and skills and if they worked full-time in a public pharmacy for at least six months in the previous year.

Pharmaceutical engineers have not been trained since German reunification. As a result, their number is declining: in 2005, 9,266 pharmacist assistants and pharmaceutical engineers were employed in public pharmacies in Germany; in 2011 there were only 7570.

The salary of pharmaceutical engineers in the pharmacy depends on the professional years and the federal state in which the activity is carried out. The salary tariff, according to which the remuneration will be between 2463 and 2750 euros (gross) from July 2013 onwards, provides guidance on payment. From July 1, 2015, these values will rise to between 2,500 and 2,791 euros, depending on the year of employment. The collective agreements in pharmacy are concluded between ADEXA - Die Apothekengewerkschaft, and the ADA (Employers' Association of German Pharmacies) or the collective bargaining association of pharmacy managers (TGL) North Rhine.
