Pharmazierat is a title that can be awarded to pharmacists and is an official title in Germany.

In some federal states of the German Reich (including Bavaria, Prussia, Thuringian states) it was awarded to honor meritorious professional activity.

Official title

In the Federal Republic of Germany , "Pharmazierat" is the official designation for officials of the entrance office (A 13) in the higher service as pharmacists. This is a career special field of study , in the respective career regulations of the Federation and the countries are governed. The official titles in the next promotion offices are Oberpharmazierat or Pharmazieoberrat (A 14), Pharmaziedirektor (A 15) and Senior Pharmaziedirektor (A 16).

Honorary service

In addition, the term "Pharmazierat" is also used for pharmacists who have been appointed honorary civil servants, but this is only possible in some countries (e.g. Bavaria, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Thuringia) . These are experts in accordance with Section 64 of the German Medicines Act , who are volunteered for state pharmacy monitoring .

Pharmaceutical Council in the GDR

In the GDR , the title was awarded to pharmacists to honor meritorious work in the health protection of the population.

On the one hand, it could be awarded for many years of successful work in a management position in institutions, state organs of the health and social services or in social organizations with excellent results in either solving the tasks of the state health and social services to increase the quality and effectiveness of medical work or the development and application of modern knowledge of medical science, research and technology in medical practice.

The recipient of the award had to be responsible for the guidance of at least eight people with a university or technical college education and had to have been in charge for at least seven years. If the management activity has been exercised for at least 15 years, the title of senior pharmacist could be awarded.

Furthermore, the title could Pharmazierat even after 20 years of pharmaceutical activity for outstanding achievements in the direct medical and social care of citizens will be awarded. The award of the title of senior pharmacist was not planned here.

Allocation mode

The title of chief pharmacist could only be bestowed by the minister for health of the GDR, the title of pharmacist by the chairman of the responsible council of the district. The decision on the award was made in agreement with the health care union.

The titles were awarded on December 11th. This was Health Care Day in the GDR. The recipient of the award received a certificate and was entitled to use the title in connection with his name. It was the highest title ever to be held. It could also be revoked again.
