The Pfauentrogon ( Pharomachrus pavoninus ) counts within the family of trogons (Trogonidae) to the genus of Pharomachrus .

The bird is found in the Amazon basin in Colombia , Venezuela , Ecuador , Peru , Brazil and Bolivia .

The distribution area includes terra firme forest up to 500 m in height.

The species is the only representative of the trogons in the lowland rainforest east of the Andes .

The Latin additional species comes from Latin pavo, pavonis 'peacock'

The bird is 33 to 34 cm tall and weighs about 158 ​​g. The male has a reddish to orange-red beak, at least at the base with a yellowish tip, the head is golden-green, the top and upper breast are metallic emerald green, the underbust to the under-tail is red. It has elongated wing-coverts and upper tail-coverts to the tip of the tail, the underside of the tail is black. The male resembles the golden headed trogon ( Pharomachrus auriceps ), but differs mainly in the color of the beak.

The female is less colorful, the head is grayish, the beak is blackish with red, the breast is brownish, the outer tail feathers are notched with gray-white banding.

The species is monotypical .

The call is described as similar to that of the gold-headed trough but less plaintive.

Way of life

This species is usually found in the middle of the tree up to the top of the tree. The diet probably consists mainly of fruits . Nothing is known about the breeding season.
