Phelps Island is a small island in the Windmill Islands archipelago off the Budd coast of Wilkesland, East Antarctica . It is located immediately west of the northern end of Shirley Island .
The island was mapped using aerial photographs from the US Operation Highjump (1946-1947) and Operation Windmill (1947-1948). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1956 after Robert F. Phelps of the United States Navy , who was involved in the construction of astronomical observation stations during Operation Windmill in January 1948.
