The Salabangka Islands ( Kepulauan Salabangka in Indonesian ) are an Indonesian group of islands on the Sulawesi coast in the Gulf of Tolo , on the edge of the Banda Sea .

The Salabangka Islands are located on the coast of the southern tip of the Central Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Tengah). The islands are separated from the coast of Sulawesi by the Salabangka Strait and together with an area on Sulawesi they form the district ( Indonesian Kecematan ) Südbungku ( Indonesian Bungku Selatan ) of the administrative district ( Indonesian Kabupaten ) Morowali .

The Salabangka Islands follow roughly from west to east in three groups in a row along the coast. The westernmost group is formed by the three main islands Padopado (Padebale), Lemo (Buadjangkar) and Paku (Bunginkela). South of Padopado is the small island of Bapa , between Padopado and Lemo the islands of Padabale , Tadinang and Buajangka . In front of Paku is the islet of Jawijawi and south of Paku and Lemo is the island of Kaleroang and the island of Karantu .

The Umbele Islands follow further east . In its center lies Umbele Gunung , the largest island, and to the west of it with Umbele , the second largest. The small island of Umbele Mandidi lies off the coast of Umbele and the islands of Pakuburan and Buaya to the northwest of the group . To the north of Umbele Gunung is the island of Rajagunung with the offshore islet Anak Rajagunung and in the northeast the islands of Panimbawang and Buagala . The east of the group is formed by the trio Pakuburan Panimbawang , Kuso and Saubane with several small islands. A little to the north of it is the islet of Tokoh Bonte .

The eastern group consists of the Sainoa Islands , the largest of which is Mitende in the east and Olohatu , the second largest, in the west. In between are the islets of Tukoh Bobagei , Tukoh Torohluko , Tukoh Co , Tukoh Mbosembah , Tukoh Matingga , Tukoh Kallo , Tukoh Parindang and Tukoh Palupasang . The islets of Tukoh Manyulodiana , Tukoh Keebuaya and Tukoh Ambau are located off the southeast coast of Mitende . Further out there are Tukoh Pancoh , Tukoh Piteang , Tukoh Belle , Tukoh Ngeang , Tukoh Mboanggo , Tukoh Bubulang and Tukoh Ngeatang . In the south there is Bungintende with a large offshore coral reef in the east, as there are several in the Salabangka Islands.

Settlements

The island's settlements are on the coast, or on stilts directly in front of it.

On Padopado are the three places Pungkeo in the east, Tapuhaka in the south and Dongkala on the north coast. On the north coast of Bapa is the place of the same name , on the south coast of Padabale the place Tapuhaka. Lying to the north by Küsen Lemos Kolono , south Waru and Waru Waru and east Butalise . The largest place on Paku is the place of the same name on the east coast. To the northeast lies Bakala , southeast Koburu and Buton . On the west coast are the places Gustobelo , Lakombulo , Bungingkela and Jawi Jawi . The only roads on the archipelago connect the villages of Pakus and a bridge leads to Salabangka on the north coast of Kaleroang.

Half of Kapola is on the north-western tip of Umbele, the other half, connected by a bridge, on Umbele Mandidi. The Polewali settlement is on the west coast of Umbeles . Umbele is located on the north coast of Umbele Gunung , and Boelimau is another settlement on the southeastern tip . In the essence of Buagala lies the Baigala settlement .

The place Sainoa occupies the western quarter of the island of Olohatu. The settlement of Mitende is located on the west coast of the island of the same name. The island of Bungintende is populated on the entire area.

Administrative division and population

Only the two administrative villages (Desa) Lalemo, 2010 census (398 inhabitants) and Lamontoli (501 inhabitants) are in Sulawesi from the district of Südbungku . The other Desas are in the Salabangka Islands.

The Desa Pulau Bapa (286 inhabitants) consists of the west of Padopado and the island of Bapa. The east of Padopado forms the Desa Pado Pado (487 inhabitants). The Desa Waru Waru (557 inhabitants) occupies the north of Lemos, contrary to the location of the place Waru Waru, which is located in the Desa Po'o (608 inhabitants), which consists of the south of Lemos. The north-east of Lemos and the north-west of Paku belong to the Desa Buajangka (569 inhabitants). The island of Buajangka forms together with Padabale and Tadinang the Desa Padabale (232 inhabitants). To Desa Bungingkela (583 inhabitants) belong the southwest Paku with the place of the same name and the island Jawijawi. The Desa Jawi Jawi (396 inhabitants) in turn is north of it. The Desa Buton (794 inhabitants) is located in the southeast of Paku; the settlement of the same name belongs to him. The Desa Koburu (238 inhabitants) further north also includes the place of this name. The Desa Lokombulo (475 inhabitants) is located in the west of Paku, the Desa Paku (435 inhabitants) is identical to the settlement of the same name and its surrounding area. The north of Paku belongs to the Desa Bakala (873 inhabitants) with its homonymous settlement. The Desa with the largest population of the entire archipelago is Kaleroang (1130 inhabitants), which includes the island of the same name. Together, the islands of the western group have 7,431 inhabitants.

The most populous Desa of the Umbele Islands is Pulau Dua (1045 inhabitants) to which the north Umele, Umbele Mandidi, Pakuburan and Buaya belong. The west of the village Kapola, like the northwest of the island, belongs to the Desa Umbele (344 inhabitants). The Desa Polewali (415 inhabitants) consists of the settlement of the same name, the south of the island Umbele and the south-west of Umbele Gunung. The place Boelimau is located in Desa of the same name (383 inhabitants), which includes the east of Umbele Gunungs and the offshore islands in the southeast. The Desa Panimbawang (675 inhabitants) includes the island of the same name, Buagala, Rajagunung with Anak Rajagunung and the north of Umbele Gunung. The Umbele Islands have a total of 2,862 inhabitants.

The Desa Sainoa (1021 inhabitants) includes all the islands of the Sainoa Islands, with the exception of Bungintende, which forms its own Desa with 669 inhabitants. The Sainoa Islands have a total of 1,690 inhabitants.

The total population of the Salabangka Islands is 11,983.

Others

The Dutch freighter SS Salabangka , which was sunk by the German U 178 off South Africa on June 1, 1943, was named after the islands .
