Phenylene group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Compounds with a phenylene group ( blue ) with R 1 , R 2 = organyl group (alkyl group, aryl group, acyl group etc.), halogen, hydroxy radical, metal etc., ortho- phenylene group, meta- phenylene group, para- phenylene group, ortho- xylene , meta -Xylene, para -Xylene (from top left to bottom right).

In organic chemistry, a phenylene group , also known as a phenylene radical, is a phenyl group that is bonded twice, i.e. the atomic group –C 6 H 4 -. Examples of compounds having a phenylene group as structural motif are ortho -, meta - and para - xylene , ortho -, meta - and para - phenylenediamine , ortho -, meta - and para - hydroxybenzoic acid and phthalic acid and phthalic anhydride .

The phenylene group should not be confused with the phenyl group (–C 6 H 5 ), the benzyl group (–CH 2 Ph) or the benzoyl group (–C (O) Ph).

An example of a molecule with a phenylene group that is important in everyday life is acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), a medicinal substance .
