Phidippus is a spider species from the family of jumping spider (Salticidae) and includes 76 species. (As of December 2016)
Some of the largest jumping spiders are assigned to this genus, and many of them are distinguished by their iridescent green jaw claws . The species of the genus are represented all over the world.
Surname
The name of the genus probably comes from a speech by Cicero with the title Pro Rege Deiotaro ( lat. "Speech in the name of King Deiotaros"): Phidippus was a doctor and the king's slave. Literally translated, the ancient Greek name means "the horses spared".
