Philip McGowan

Philip James Kevin McGowan (born March 6, 1964 in Milnthorpe , Cumbria ) is a British ornithologist. His main research interests are the chicken birds , especially the pheasants .

Life

In 1983 McGowan took part in the Himachal Wildlife Project in the Himalayas . In 1985 a Himalayan expedition from the Universities of Newcastle and Aberdeen followed, and in 1987 a Philippines expedition from Newcastle University . In 1987 he graduated from Newcastle University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Plant Biology . In 1992 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the social organization of the Malay Spiegelpfaus ( Polyplectron malacense ) for Ph.D. at the Open University in Milton Keynes . He then did research there for a year as a post-doctoral student . From 1991 to 1996 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the World Pheasant Association (WPA). From 1992 to 1993 he was nature conservation officer, from 2001 to 2005 nature conservation director and from 2005 to 2012 he was director of this organization. In 1994 he was elected to the governing body of the WPA. From 2002 to 2012 he worked for the Galliformes Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission as program coordinator. Since 2013 he has been Senior Lecturer in Conservation and Biodiversity at the School of Biology at Newcastle University; since 2015 he has been deputy director of the Institute for Sustainability at the same university. McGowan is also a member of several organizations and groups, including BirdLife International , Species Survival Commission, Partridge Quail and Francolin Specialist Group (since 1992), Pheasant Specialist Group (since 1993), Megapode Specialist Group (since 1992), American Ornithologists' Union , Oriental Bird Club and the Society of Conservation Biology .

McGowan has worked as an international consultant and conservationist since the 1990s. He conducted field studies of endangered and critically endangered chickens in Asia, Africa and South America, with a focus on India, Nepal, China and Brazil. Projects in which McGowan was involved included the Brunei Rainforest Project of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam in 1992, the conservation assessment of chickens between 1992 and 1993, a study of the habitat use of the swamp Frankolin in India (1993) and the identification of key areas with regard to the Conservation of Asian chickens (1994).

McGowan wrote numerous scientific articles, mostly on the pheasant-like, in journals such as the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club , Forktail , Journal of Tropical Ecology, and the Journal of the World Pheasant Association . In 1994 he wrote the chapter on the family of pheasant-like (Phasianidae) in Handbook of the Birds of the World .
