Philip Harris, Baron Harris of Peckham

Philip Charles Harris, Baron Harris of Peckham (born September 15, 1942 in Peckham , south London ) is an English entrepreneur , politician of the Conservative Party and a member of the House of Lords .

Professional career

Harris is a director of Carpetright , the UK's largest flooring retailer. He was the managing director of Harris Carpets. Harris Carpets took over competitor Queensway in 1977 and merged to Harris Queensway plc until the company was finally taken over in 1988. Lord Harris also served on the board of Great Universal Stores plc for 18 years, stepping down in July 2004. Lord Harris became a member of the board of directors of Matalan in October 2004 .

Nobility and Politics

On July 24, 1985 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor . On January 11, 1996 he was raised as Baron Harris of Peckham , of Peckham in the London Borough of Southwark , to life peer and has been a member of the House of Lords , where he is a member of the Conservative Party . He gave his first speech in parliament on May 21, 1996.

Since November 2005 he has been on the board of directors of Arsenal London .

Donations to the Conservative Party

Harris made party donations to David Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party . He is referred to as one of his friends. It is reported that he played a crucial role in Cameron's victory in the election as party leader in the summer of 2005. His ties to Cameron were investigated when it was discovered that Andrew Feldman, a party friend of his and also a party donor, had abused Hariss' name to claim privileges enjoyed by members of the House of Lords. According to a report in The Independent , a senior member of the Lords Privileges Committee said the incident shows how fundraising is poisoning politics .

British Education and the Harris Federation

He has been a strong advocate of education and many schools and colleges (e.g. Harris Manchester College (Oxford) ) bear his name. Many secondary schools have received funding from the Harris Federation . In Croydon he supported the founding of the Harris City Technology College , the Harris Academy South Norwood and the Harris Academy Purley and the Harris Academy Chafford Hundred ; however, many citizens were upset that the original Stanley Technical High School name was being abandoned in favor of the Harris name.

Olympic Games London 2012

Lord Harris is co-owner of the winning horse of the Olympic Games show jumping in the team competition Hello Sanctos , ridden by Scott Brash .

Lord Harris and Lord Kirkham bought the horse in early 2012 for an estimated € 2 million.

Personal

Lord Harris has been married to Pauline Norma Chumley since 1960. They have a daughter and three sons.

Sunday Times Rich List

He was ranked 206 on the Sunday Times' 2006 list of the richest Britons in Britain with an estimated fortune of £ 285 million. (2004 162nd with £ 254m, 2005 192nd with £ 250m).
