The Granadillar dam was built in 1930 near El Toscon on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria in a narrow gorge (Barranco del Toscon). The structure was a 22 m high and 170 m long gravity dam made of masonry. The reservoir contained 110,300 m³ of water.
catastrophe
On February 21, 1934, the dam suddenly broke when the reservoir was first filled. A bridge was destroyed, houses and banana fields were devastated in Teror. Eight people died in the tidal wave . The accident became known as the "El Toscón accident".
An inadequate wall cross-section is cited as the reasons for the failure in the specialist literature. (Failure of dam due to inadequate cross section.)
The building was abandoned. Today the ruins can still be seen. A small lake has formed behind the remains of the dam.
