Philip Sparke (* 1951 in London ) is an English composer and musician .

Life

Sparke studied composition , trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music in London and graduated with honors. During his studies his interest in brass band music grew . He played as a trumpeter in the college's wind orchestra and, at the suggestion of Philip Cannon , who taught at the Royal College of Music, ran a brass band with his fellow students. His Concert Prelude (brass band) and Gaudium (wind band = wind band) date from this time .

His growing interest led to composition commissions. The first significant order was for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand . For this he composed The Land of the Long White Cloud - "Aotearoa" .

His best-known works for brass band include The Year of the Dragon , Harmony Music , Partita , Tryptich for Band , the Jubilee Overture , A London Overture , Cambridge Variations , the Hymn of the Highlands (a multi-movement suite about the rugged and majestic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands ), as well as the solo works Song & Dance for cornet and Masquerade and Capricorno for alto horn .

With his works ( Slipstream , Skyrider and Orient Express ) he won the EBU composition competition for new wind orchestra works three times in a row for the BBC . In 1997 he won the very coveted and well-known Sudler Prize with Dance Movements in the United States . He can now be described as the most famous composer of contemporary English wind orchestra music for the past 20 years.

He founded his own publishing house in London that publishes his works.

In addition to his frequent activity as a guest conductor and workshop leader, he also performs the role of music director of the Hilingdon Brass Band .

The world premiere took place on November 22nd, 2014 in the Stadttheater Bremerhaven in the presence of the composer.
