Philip de Harcourt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip de Harcourt († 1142 ) was Lord Chancellor and Lord Seal Keeper of England under the reign of King Stephen . When Bishop Roger of Salisbury died († 1139), the king wanted to succeed Philip de Harcourt, his chancellor, but he failed because of the resistance of the Bishop of Winchester, Henry of Blois , as well as the clergy of Salisbury . Due to the dispute, the bishop's chair remained vacant until Philip's death.

Philip de Harcourt was also Dean of Beaumont and Lincoln , Bishop of Bayeux and - at least according to his own judgment - elected Bishop of Salisbury .
