As early as 1898 the Physikalische Verein called for a monument to be erected in honor of Philipp Reis. In the club building at Eschenheimer Tor , Reis first presented his telephone to the public on October 26, 1861 . The association formed a committee to raise the necessary £ 1,500 . The monument was designed by Friedrich Christoph Hausmann in 1919. The foundation stone was laid on October 26, 1919. There was a scandal because of the two naked young men pictured.
