Philippa Roet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philippa Roet , also known as Philippa de Roet , Philippa de Rouet , Philippa Pan or Philippa Chaucer (* around 1346 in Le Rœulx , Hainaut , † probably 1387 in London, Middlesex ) was a lady in waiting for the English royal consort Philippa of Hainaut .

She was the second daughter of Sir Gilles, called "Paon de Rouet", a Hennegau nobleman who had come to England in the wake of the king's wife. Her younger sister Catherine Swynford was mistress from 1372, from 1396 the third wife of John of Gent . In 1366 she married the writer Geoffrey Chaucer . The marriage resulted in at least two sons and two daughters, including Thomas Chaucer . At the royal court she was not only at the service of the king's wife, but also Isabella of York and, after the queen's death, also Constanze of Castile , the second wife of John of Ghent.

Not much is known about her life. Her marriage to Chaucer is concluded from a note in the files of the court treasury, in which her annual income of 10 marks is awarded, or around 7 pounds sterling . This payment was last recorded in 1387 and is therefore believed to have died around this time.
