Life
Isabella de Castilla y León was a daughter of the Castilian King Peter the Cruel (1334-1369) and his wife on the left hand María de Padilla (1334-1361), daughter of Juan García de Padilla, 1st Señor de Villagera, and his wife María Fernández de Henestrosa. She was the younger sister and sister-in-law of Constance of Castile (1354-1394), married Duchess of Lancaster.
For political reasons of her family she was in the spring of 1372 at Hertford Castle with the English nobleman Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (1341-1402), fourth son of King Edward III. and his wife Philippa von Hennegau , married. Three children sprang from this connection:
- Edward of Norwich, 2nd Duke of York (1373–1415), killed at the Battle of Azincourt
- ⚭ 1415 Philippa of Mohun (1376–1431)
- Constanze of York (1374-1416), Countess of Gloucester
- ⚭ 1397 Thomas le Despenser, 1st Earl of Gloucester (1373–1400), executed,
- who had an affair with Edmund Holland, 4th Earl of Kent (1384-1408) ( House of Holland )
- Richard of Conisburgh, 1st Earl of Cambridge (1375–1415), executed, grandfather of Kings Edward IV and Richard III.
- ⚭ 1406 Lady Anne Mortimer (1390–1411)
- ⚭ 1411 Lady Matilda de Clifford (1391–1446)
In 1378 Isabella was inducted into the Order of the Garter as Lady of the Garter . In 1381 she accompanied her husband when he undertook a failed campaign in Portugal. The English chronicler Thomas Walsingham reports that her cosmopolitan appearance was later registered with great interest at the court of King Richard II . After her death on December 23, 1392, she was buried on January 14, 1393 in Kings Langley Manor House in Hertfordshire .
