Maria de Padilla

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doña María Díaz de Padilla (* 1334 ; † 1361 in Seville ) was a Castilian noblewoman and mistress of Peter I the Cruel , King of Castile and León .

Life

Maria was the daughter of Juan García de Padilla, 1st Señor de Villagera, and his wife María Fernández de Henestrosa. She came from a converted Jewish family.

In June 1353, under pressure from his mother and the court, King Peter married the French Princess Blanche of Bourbon (1339-1361), the second daughter of Duke Peter I of Bourbon . Shortly thereafter, however, he had her arrested and lived again with his lover Maria de Padilla, whom he married in 1353 ( marriage to the left ). This act had far-reaching consequences: the Pope, the clergy and the high nobility turned away from him. The favor of their brothers by King Peter also outraged the nobility. The relationship resulted in four children and María de Padilla even achieved her daughters' legitimacy through a false priesthood.

Worth mentioning

She is the title character of Jacques-François Ancelot's tragedy Maria Padilla , on which the opera Maria Padilla by Gaetano Donizetti , premiered in 1841, is based.
