Philippe Gautier

Philippe Gautier (born February 1, 1960 in Bujumbura ) is a Belgian lawyer and registrar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) since 2019 .

After studying law and philosophy at the Université catholique de Louvain , where he also received his doctorate in law in 1992 , he worked in various departments of the Belgian Foreign Ministry from 1984 to 1997 . There he dealt with international law issues, most recently as head of the department for international treaties . Since 1985 he has been working at the Université catholique de Louvain, where he has held a professorship for international law since 1996. In addition, Gautier was visiting professor in 1987 at the University of Butare , Rwanda , from 2002 to 2004 at the Universidad para la Paz in San José (Costa Rica) and from 2004/2005 at the University of Amsterdam . From 1997 to 2001 Gautier was deputy and from 2001 to 2019 senior clerk at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

As an advisor on the staff of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and head of the Belgian delegation, he played a key role in the establishment of the International Tribunal for the Sea.

On May 22, 2019, the International Court of Justice elected Gautier as its registrar. Gautier's tenure at the IGH is 7 years and began on August 1, 2019.
