The Observatorio Astronómico de La Plata (English La Plata Astronomical Observatory ) is an observatory in the city of La Plata , Argentina . The IAU code is 839.

The establishment was decided on May 7, 1881 by decree of the founder of La Plata and governor of Buenos Aires Dardo Rocha . Construction began in 1883, a year after the Paris Observatory sent instruments to Argentina to observe the Venus transit , which was of considerable scientific interest and the site was well suited for observation.

The largest instruments are an 80 cm reflector telescope , an excellent instrument for the time, and a 43 cm refractor , both manufactured by Gaultier. The observatory was declared Outstanding Astronomical Heritage by the International Astronomical Union because of its importance in the history of astronomy .

The observatory consists of several buildings and is located in the Paseo del Bosque park . It is also accessible as a public observatory. This also includes a museum, the Museo de Astronomía y Geofísica.
