Philippe Lucas (born November 1, 1963 in Saint-Cloud ) is a former French football player .

Player career

Lucas grew up in the metropolitan area of the French capital Paris and began playing football at a club from Louveciennes located there before he was accepted into the youth department of the professional club EA Guingamp . He was 16 years old when he was appointed to the club's second division team in 1980 and was able to establish himself in this after a short time.

In 1982 he was lured away by the first division club FC Sochaux and after a while secured a regular place. He was set in defensive midfield and remained loyal to the club after it was relegated to the second division in 1987; a year later, the team succeeded in direct promotion. At the same time, he made it to the national cup final in 1988 , but was not on the field when he lost on penalties to FC Metz . Thanks to a fourth place in the first division season 1988/89, the club received the start permit for the coming season in the European competition, which Lucas ran for the first time on an international level. When Sochaux then had to fight to stay up again, the player turned his back on the club in 1992 after ten years.

In the same year, Lucas signed with league rivals Girondins Bordeaux , where despite his age of around 30 he was one of the top performers in a team that reached the European competition three times in a row from 1993. Most recently, Bordeaux led to the 1996 UEFA Cup final , which was lost to Bayern Munich . Lucas, who was on the field in both finals and had been a regular player to the end, then ended his career at the age of 32 after 372 first division games with two goals and 86 second division games with six goals. He then stayed at Bordeaux as a youth coach.
