Life

Best's father was the brewer Jacob Best . In 1842 Best's brothers Jacob and Charles emigrated to the United States and settled in Kilbourntown, Milwaukee . Two years later, his father decided to follow suit with the rest of the family.

In 1850, the sons Charles and Lorenz left the company to set up their own brewery, which later became known as the Miller Brewing Company under the direction of Frederick Miller . When Best's father retired in 1853, he took over the brewery. Six years later he renamed it the Phillip Best Brewing Company .

In the 1860s, Best handed over management to his sons-in-law Frederick Pabst and Emil Schandein , who each bought half of the shares in the brewery. Under Pabst and Schandein the company became the successful Pabst Brewing Company .
