Emil Schandein

Emil Eugen Schandein (born April 16, 1840 in Obermoschel , † July 22, 1888 in Bremen ) was a German-American entrepreneur and co-owner of the Pabst Brewing Company .

Life

Schandein's parents were the royal tax and community collector Joseph Wilhelm Schandein (1800–1862) and Louisa Schandein (née Barth). His uncle was the historian Ludwig Schandein .

At the age of 16 he emigrated to the USA and settled in Philadelphia . After working in various cities, he moved to Watertown , Wisconsin , in 1863 . There he married Elizabetha "Lisette" Best., A daughter of the brewery owner Phillip Best , in 1866

Together with his brother-in-law, Frederick Pabst , he bought shares in the Philip Best Brewing Company and was Vice President from 1873 until his death.

In addition to his work for the brewery, Schandein was one of the founders and first president of the German Society of Milwaukee. He was also a director of Northwestern Life Insurance Company , Second Ward Savings Bank, and President of the Milwaukee Brewers Association .

Schandein died in 1888 during a stay in Germany. It is in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee . to bury

It was only after his death in 1889 that the Schandein Mansion, a mansion in the German Renaissance style, was completed on 24th and Grand Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue) in Milwaukee . The Milwaukee County Emergency Hospital was built on the site of the building in 1929 .

His widow Lisette Schandein took over his post as Vice President after his death until 1894. She died in 1905 during a stay in Germany.

Schandein bequeathed part of his fortune to the Kaiserslautern district secondary school and the Palatinate Industrial Museum . The Schandeinstrasse in Kaiserslautern is named after him. The Schandeinstrasse in Speyer is named after his uncle Ludwig.

Emil Schandein was married to Elisabeth / Lisette Best (* September 4, 1848, † 1905) since 1866. The following children were born from the marriage:
