Johann Jacob Best (born May 1, 1786 in Mettenheim , † February 26, 1861 in Milwaukee ) was a German entrepreneur and brewer . He was the founder of the Best and Company , which later became known as the Pabst Brewing Company .

Life

Best learned the brewing trade in Mettenheim and opened a brewery there, which he operated until he emigrated in 1844. His parents were Johann Lorentz Best (born March 29, 1759 Schornsheim) ⚭ May 13, 1783 in Mettenheim Eva Maria Zatzmann (born March 9, 1752 Mettenheim). In 1842 his sons Jacob Best, Jr. and Charles emigrated to the United States and settled in Kilbourntown, one of the earliest settlements in Milwaukee . There they founded the Empire Brewery .

Best followed with his sons Phillip and Lorenz in 1844. The family ran the Empire Brewery together , which was soon renamed Best and Company (also Best and Sons ). The brewery was on Chestnut Street. In addition to beer, the family also made whiskey and vinegar. In order to meet the increasing demand for beer, they left the whiskey and vinegar business.

In 1850, the sons Charles and Lorenz left the family business and founded their own brewery, the Plank Road Brewery , which later became known as the Miller Brewing Company .

Best retired in 1853 and handed over the management of the brewery to his son Phillip. He renamed the brewery six years later the Phillip Best Brewing Company . The brewery changed its name to Pabst Brewing Company in 1889 .

In his retirement, Best worked as a local politician. Among other things, he worked as a school representative.

Jacob Best is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee .
