Maakenwerder harbor
The Maakenwerder Hafen is a former port in Hamburg-Waltershof , a Hamburg district in the Hamburg-Mitte district .
The Maakenwerder port was laid out from 1910 due to the port expansion plan. It was designed for shipping on the Lower Elbe and was used by small vehicles and yachts . At times wrecks were dumped here and a B&V floating dock was repaired in 1953. In February 1962, the flood disaster also caused victims in allotment garden colonies and gazebos, which were flooded and later cleared.
From the end of November 1968, the harbor basin, which had previously been closed by a dam, was pumped out and leveled in order to produce the eight caissons for the construction of the New Elbe Tunnel , which were later to be sunk in the northern Elbe along the A 7 . In 1972 the prefabricated tunnel segments in the bottom of the Elbe were washed in and then connected.
The old harbor basin was filled in until 1975, only the north-western part can still be seen today as a reed zone on a small area on the Norderelbe, which is located on the south side of the Elbe west of the entrance to the Köhlbrand . This area was not backfilled because the weight of the sand would have become too heavy for the tube of the Elbe tunnel that ascends here.
