Philodromus margaritatus is aspecies of spider from the family of running spiders (Philodromidae)nativeto Central Europe .

description

The females reach a body length of 5 to 6 mm, the male about 5 millimeters, so the species belongs to the medium-sized native walking spiders. Philodromus margaritatus shows a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of color and drawing. The females are colored whitish to light brown, the males clearly darker, both have pairs of legs of the same length with black-brown spots. Males and females have conspicuous spines at the end of the opisthosoma (rear body). In addition to two tarsal claws, the species has distinctive adhesive hair pads, with which they can move safely even on smooth surfaces. Overall, the body is flattened, which is due to their habitat under the tree bark.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Central Europe. Philodromus margaritatus prefers to inhabit coniferous forests, but can also be found in deciduous forests and usually stays on or under the tree bark, where it also hibernates over the winter.

Way of life

Philodromus margaritatus does not build fishing nets and hunts its prey, small insects and ants, running freely on or under the tree bark and is less of a hunter in ambush. It can reach quite high speeds.
