Philological Society
The Philological Society , PhilSoc for short ( Philological Society ) was founded in London in 1842 with the participation of the historian and philologist Edwin Guest (1800-1880). It was the oldest scientific learned society in Great Britain. Before that, there was already a society of the same name at the University of London in 1830, which was founded by renowned philologists to promote the study and research of the structure and knowledge of the history of language development.
New English Dictionary
The Philological Society dedicated to keeping both the study of languages, and the historical and comparative linguistics and the development history of modern English language. The founding members had decided in 1857 that the existing English language dictionaries were incomplete and inadequate, and so in 1858 they called for a complete revision of the Anglo-Saxon language. In doing so, they underestimated the scope and time required to create this new work. After the initial euphoria, the project got off to a very slow start. In 1879, the Society therefore signed an agreement with James AH Murray and Oxford University Press to finally begin work on the New English Dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary was later developed from this project .
engagement
- Publication of the journal Transactions of the Philological Society (TPhS) and the book series Publications of the Philological Society by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
- Since 2000 competition in honor of Robert Henry Robins (1921–2000), the long-time secretary (1961–1988) and former President (1988–1992) of the Society, to which students can submit essays (every two years).
- In 2015, £ 11,400 grants were awarded to help some members attend conferences and field research.
- In 2016, a fund was set up to support public events with small grants.
